context
The COVID-19 pandemic led to numerous changes in our daily routines. One major shift that affected people globally was the widespread adoption of the work-from-home model. In 2020, 88% of companies worldwide incorporated it as a predominant mode of work (via: EAE Business School). This meant a drastic change for many individuals who had never worked under these conditions before, causing challenges in:
difficulty in concentration
time management
staying productive
the challenge
Design a mobile app that provides tools to enhance user’s work routine, where they can stay motivated with goals, receive constant reminders, share their achievements, and celebrate upon completing proposed tasks
user research
We created a user persona profile to better understand the type of user we were working with. this guided our approach in the design process by constantly reminding us of the expectations, challenges, behaviors, and ultimate goals of our users.
We discovered the type of people we were working with were primarily neurodivergent users with an affinity for technology and minimalist design, people that interact with technology and devices in their daily and enjoy doing so.
the findings
After some interviews, we concluded that the biggest frustrations were related to:
feeling overwhelmed by the quantity of tasks to complete
having trouble concentrating
not being productive
ideation
Thanks to these results, we decided to focus on the main features needed on the app, which were: add tasks, pomodoro timer and mark tasks as completed.
We created the flowchart we needed for those main features to work, and additionally we added the onboarding process, which was a requirement of the project deliverable.
Then we started with low-fidelity wireframes to visualize the requirements the app needed. With these wireframes, we iterated designs that allowed us to quickly test and modify ideas, enabling us to meet successfully the project’s timeline.
the solution
Productivity app: Onboarding
This app allows users to effortlessly conquer their tasks and boost their productivity seamlessly. It helps them unlock their potential and elevate efficiency.
Productivity app: Log in
Users can log in by entering their email or using their Google or Facebook accounts to simplify the process and save their valuable time.
Productivity app: Pomodoro timer
Users can work in 25-minute intervals and manage it by using the play, pause, restart, and finish controls. Additionally, they can add tasks, mark them as completed, and visualize which task they are currently focusing on.
Productivity app: Break
It reminds them of the importance of taking 5-minute breaks, displays the remaining time, and also allows time management from the controls panel.
Productivity app: Statistics
Statistics allow them to visualize the work that has been accomplished in the last day, week or month. Additionally, they can see the completed tasks according to the selected time.
Productivity app: Profile
From the profile, they can manage the global history and personal information. Also, it allows users to change the duration of work and break intervals, giving them more control.
learnings
At the end of the project, we managed to design a solution that met all the requirements set by the course. We designed a user-friendly interface that fulfilled usability and interaction concepts, applying principles such as cognitive psychology and design guidelines and standards. For next steps, it would be ideal to conduct usability tests with users to identify areas for improvement and address all user needs. Additionally, it would be beneficial to create a design system to ensure design consistency and quality.
